Noted Expert on China and Tibet Says: “I couldn’t set it down.”

Prof. James D. Seymour was Senior Research Scholar at Columbia University’s East Asian Institute, where he specialized in Chinese politics. He is co-author of the book New Ghosts, Old Ghosts: Prisons and Labor Form Camps in China (available in English and Chinese), and currently teaches at Chinese Hong Kong University.

Although currently denied entry into China, Dr. Seymour has traveled widely throughout the nation, and written many articles about human rights issues. He is one of the early signatories of the appeal letter to Chinese authorities on behalf of the detained Chinese scholars.

Regarding “My Two Chinas,” my forthcoming book with Tang Baiqiao, Prof. Seymour writes:

“One can make sweeping statements about China, and they will probably be at least partially true. But a higher level of truth is found in the day-to-day experiences of someone like Baiqiao Tang. Although he writes mostly about his native Hunan Province, this is the story of China. Tang’s grandfather used to complain about the decline of the writing skills of his countrymen. Too bad he isn’t alive to enjoy his grandson’s beautifully written autobiography, which reads almost like a novel. I couldn’t set it down.”

My Two Chinas” recounts Tang Baiqiao’s experiences as a student leader during the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989; how he was subsequently hunted by the Chinese government and jailed for his pro-democracy activities; the physical and mental tortures he endured while in prison; his release, and eventual flight to the U.S.

Despite living in exile these past 21 years, Tang Baiqiao has never relented in his campaign to bring human rights and freedom to his homeland, and throughout the world.

Prometheus Books will release “My Two Chinas” in hardcover (and e-book) in March, 2011.
