A powerful quote comes from Yan Jiaqi, former head of the Institute of Politics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Yan has been called “China’s first political scientist.†He earned a reputation as a reformist throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
In the spring of 1989, Yan lent his influential voice to the chorus of intellectuals asking the Communist Party government to dialogue with student and worker demonstrators. When the Party refused, Yan cast his lot with the estimated millions of Chinese across the country who were willing to continue the protest despite the government’s threats of violence.
In late June of ’89, after the massacre in Tiananmen Square, Yan Jiaqi fled to Hong Kong and later took up residence in France. He now lives and resides in the U.S. where he writes regularly for Chinese-language publications around the world. Among his notable books is Turbulent Decade: A History of the Cultural Revolution. Yan continues to advocate for democratic reform in China.
After reading our book, Yan Jiaqi writes:
“Tang Baiqiao’s support for Chinese freedom and human rights has remained constant since his days as a student leader during the 1989 democracy movement, as conveyed in this outstanding book. His work and indomitable fighting spirit have made a tremendous impact on the international community. His unwavering belief in China’s future as a democracy makes him a voice to be heeded as the world continues to change.â€
