“Godfather of Dissent” praises “My Two Chinas”

On 29, Sep 2010 | In Non-Fiction Book | By admin

Xu Wenli has gone by many names over the course of his long human rights career. His colleagues have called him “The Godfather of Dissent,” for having the temerity to found the Chinese Democratic Party in the Communist People’s Republic of China. Once the government threw him in jail, Xu was known as Prisoner 001 — the most dangerous man in China.

Imprisoned for more than 15 years, Xu suffered isolation, torture, disease, and humiliation, among other human rights atrocities. His health began to crack due when he contracted Hepatitis B in 1999. Thanks to the efforts of lawyers from Human Rights First, Xu was flown to the United States where he was later granted political asylum.

Xu Wenli’s endorsement of “My Two Chinas” — like the endorsement of all dissidents who have suffered in their fight for democracy — is a great honor for which my co-author, Tang Baiqiao, and I are extremely thankful.

“Do you remember the massacre that took place at Tiananmen Square? Do you remember the brave souls who gave their lives for democracy? Tang Baiqiao has never forgotten. His excellent book serves a noble purpose: to remind the world of what China lost, and what its people still hope to gain.”

– Xu Wenli, founder of the Chinese Democracy Party, imprisoned for sixteen years for pro-democracy activism, now senior fellow at the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University.

“My Two Chinas: The Memoir of a Chinese Revolutionary” is my latest book co-written with noted Chinese dissident, Tang Baiqiao.

Prometheus Books will release “My Two Chinas” in hardcover (and e-book) in March, 2011.
